Offense

Nothing can kill intimacy between you and God more quickly than offense. Offense is defined by: annoyance or resentment brought about by a perceived insult to or disregard for oneself or one's standards or principles. It's not unforgiveness because that means we won't let go of the person's debt or perceived crime against us. Offense is more like being hurt and staying that way. Just plain old resentful. Carrying around the pain because someone hurt you is more like offense. You let go of their transgression but you still are holding on to the pain. Guess what? The longer you let it fester the more chances it will turn into resentment and unforgiveness. The next thing you know you are far from feeling the presence of God. The pain and hurt you feel takes over. Soon you are angry all of the time taking things out on others because you can't stuff it down. You start thinking about what that person did all of the time and your thoughts are far from God. YOU CANNOT stay on the narrow road and allow that kind of anger to dominate you. That is walking in the way of Cain. "Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah." Jude v 11 Cain killed his brother. That's where the spirit of offense leads. You will have so much anger that you will kill righteous Abel just because you hate his relationship with God. You wish you were there but can't because of the anger and offense in your heart. So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Genesis 4:6,7

That kind of anger turns into a spirit of murder. We need to rule over our feelings not the other way around. "He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city." Proverbs 16:32 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder,and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:21-24

Anger leads to calling people names, cursing them, false accusation, gossip and slander. This is the sin of reviling. God's word says we will not enter into the kingdom of heaven if we are revilers. 1 Cor. 6:9-10 The worse consequence however is what it ultimately leads to: "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." Matthew 6:15 Unforgiveness always leads to separation from God! You become like the person with the stone in their hand when God is asking you to drop it. NO ONE is without sin. An offended heart is a heart that is separated from God. I can't tell you the countless people that have walked away from God or cannot seem to stay in fellowship with God because of this. Just this week I was there too! I had to name each person that hurt me and forgive each action they offended or hurt me with. Father, I forgive so and so for.....and I loose the offense from my heart. Ahhhhh, such freedom. Like Jesus said, "Forgive them Father for they know not what they do." Not easy but if you pray for those who hurt you and despitefully use you God will give you the grace to move forward. Love does not keep a record of wrong doing! Amen!

Dead Flies In The Ointment

Have you ever left a sweet drink or water unattended and right before you were about to take a drink, you noticed a dead fly in it? The thought is quite repulsive to even think about. Yet this morning I clearly heard the Lord say, "There is dead fly in the ointment." As I heard this, I had a vision of a dead fly floating on top of oil, not just any oil but anointing oil. Curious, I looked up the scripture because it came to my memory. "Dead flies putrefy the perfumer’s ointment, And cause it to give off a foul odor; So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor." (Ecclesiastes 10:1)

So what is God saying? Are you able to pick out the flies or discern what is not true or part of the anointing? Can you tell the counterfeit from the real? Can you discern what is coming from the soul of man or from the heart of God? For I forewarn you that there will come false brethren among you and those who proclaim to know Christ. There will be those who will be sent among you who are been given the ability to deceive by the realm of darkness. Even now the anti-Christ spirit is operating in the highest levels of office in this nation but some have not been able to discern it. The anti-Christ spirit has been released in the media and has been infecting all those who sit under its influence. Spirits of perversion and lust permeate the air waves. This is why the music must get turned off. The TV must get turned off. The air waves are carrying seductive spiritual activity and you must be able to discern it. The anti-Christ spirit is the way of Cain and it seeks to murder righteous Abel. It was present in Jesus day and it is now increasing in our day. Righteousness and good fruit will be persecuted. They will call good, evil and evil, good. Cain murdered Abel because his works were not approved by God. 

Religion and the anti-Christ spirit are not very different. That is why they work well together. Religion and politics seek control. They lust after power and money. It was the religious who sought after Jesus' death and they used politics to achieve their goals. Even now there some among us who pose as sheep but are ravenous wolves. They use religion as a means to make you think they are part of us but are only using God as a means for their own agendas. Don't be fooled. The Germans were fooled by Hitler. He promised them a "Positive Christianity" and ended up murdering those who elected him. Hitler did not initially remove "Christianity" from Germany. He modified it. He changed the way people perceived Jesus. He incorporated religion as a means to deceive the masses. They were not able to pick out the flies out of the ointment.

What are these flies you may ask? It self interest, greed, control, popularity, conceit and lust after worldly pleasures disguised behind Christian platitudes. Many don't realize what they have been sitting under has been tainted. The ointment is tainted by attitudes and motivations that do not come from Jesus' heart. It may look good on the surface but does it sound like something Jesus would say? Do the messengers look anything like Jesus? Does their lifestyle contradict the way Jesus lived? Did Jesus conduct His ministry like they do? Some would dismiss His teachings as "old fashioned" or not relevant, offering you liberty from His commandments. I ask you which one of His commandments should we disobey? Thou shalt not murder or thou shalt not lust in your heart after a woman? 

For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (Galatians 5:13)

This is why the message of the cross is offensive to those who pretend they are His. It crucifies the nature of men and their selfish motivation. It calls us to serve and not be served. It exposes the flies in the ointment. It uncovers the heart and leaves no room for excuses. The truth of God's unchangeable word confronts the deceitful nature of men. The Holy Spirit takes us into the courtroom of God and convicts us of our deeds declaring them unfit for His kingdom. There He judges the true intention of our hearts. It is there that we drop the act and pretense we have put up in front of others. If we were truly to feel the Holy Spirit's conviction again in church we would be on our knees weeping for the many offenses and hurts we have caused God's heart. However, God's people have sat comfortable in the church without any thought of their lives. They have declared themselves not guilty in the courtroom of God without full examination of their lives in the light of God's Word and conviction of the Holy Spirit. They run from place to place trying to appease the emptiness they feel with conference and motivational speakers. They say God's not angry with us anymore! How would they know, did they ask Him or did they judge their actions by what someone else has said in a book? 

They silenced the voice of the Holy Spirit and made up presumptuous reasons why they live the way they do. They have taken up His job and have decided what is right and wrong. They have become the law givers and judges!

Oh the cross, can only be carried by those who willingly submit to the only lawgiver, judge and justifier of what is good. The cross calls all of humanity to put away all selfish desire and have love dictate the hearts of those who carry it. It sees the faces of all those who say crucify, one day shouting hosanna! It pushes past the crowds, to one objective... to bring others to God's glorious presence! However, it does not paint a pretty picture for those being called to carry it. That would be deception. No friends, the cross must be presented with its rugged wood, splinters and heavy beams. That's how Jesus presented it to His disciples. Never did He mention the ease of following Him. Never did He motivate the crowds with splendor, fame or fortune. Far from that my friend. Instead He challenged them by saying, "Will you leave me too?" He healed the masses not in effort for a campaign to build His own personal empire here on earth. He simply did so out of love. He held unto nothing and so the devil had nothing in Him. Do you know why the devil could take Jesus to the wilderness, then to a high mountain, offer him everything in the world and Jesus was still able to refuse all temptation? Jesus had already resolved that this world was not as important as you and me. The cross is about valuing relationships over things. The cross is a value decision. It is putting God and mankind over self! It is a declaration of triumph over the Adamic nature! The cross is love's greatest victory! Outside of the cross we can never hold onto victory. That is why we must embrace it on a daily basis. Beware of those who offer you a shortcut or a detour from the cross. They will from every side cry save yourself and come down from that cross. It was a thief that shouted that to Jesus. It is a thief (Devil) that shouts that today through books, CD's and even the pulpits of America. He knows that dying to self brings resurrection and victory. Satan dreads the day Christians once again find the true power behind Christianity ~ The Cross.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Revelations 12:11

Stewardship Series: Words of Life or Death?

In the following series we will be dealing with some very destructive mindsets that have crept into the church which have caused some unwanted effects on many Christians. These mindsets have caused anything from continued failed relationships, harmful habits, poverty, compromise and unsuccessful attempts at breaking addictions. It has also kept many Christians from reaching their personal goals and obtaining the prophetic promises of God. Much of this has to do with the idea that all the work has already been done on God's side. While the work of the grace has freed us from the power of sin, death and the grave. However, it has not taken care of our responsibility to work on our character, integrity, motives and attitudes. From the beginning God's intention was to hand mankind dominion and authority over the earth. He gave us all a free will. He gave Adam and Eve the power to name the animals and decide whether they would obey Him. Everyday we become either victims or victors depending on the decisions we make. In this particular blog we will deal with the power of our words. We need to remember that we were made after the likeness of God. He created everything with His words and the bible teaches us that: 

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:21).

Some of us have been eating the fruit of the words that others have spoken over us. Some of you reading this today are slowly dying from the words of death caused by criticism, slander, malice, backbiting, gossip and negativity. Despite of what people say; words will hurt you but we should never allow those words to define us. Sadly, some of these words have come from those who claim to know and live for Christ. Their words betray them. Jude declares a warning to those who have gone in the way of Cain:

Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. (Jude 1:11).

Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, Him I will destroy; The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart, Him I will not endure. (Proverbs 101:5).

What was the way of Cain? Cain murdered his brother because he felt slighted by God. He became offended at the thought that God might have been favoring his brother Abel. Instead of correcting the things in his own life so that he too could please God he came against his brother out of jealousy. Some of you might immediately dismiss the idea of this applying to you because you would never think of murdering anyone. Yet Jesus taught that we can murder people in our hearts through judgment, words and hatred. 

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. The Apostle of Love also admonishes us not to be like Cain.

For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, 12 not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous. (1 John 3:11-13)

I can't count the many times I have personally witnessed leaders slander people in their fellowship. They think that because they do it behind closed doors that God cannot see. Before long it becomes a toxic waste dump and the Holy Spirit is no where to be found. Believe me when I tell you that I have personally witnessed the destruction of many churches over words. God can not be part of this behavior. The bible calls this spiritual cannibalism. 

For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another! (Galatians 5:14-15)

What's worse is the gossip and libel that hurts many ministries. Just because it's on the internet does not mean it is true. There are tons of claims online from offended Christians. Some are true but most of the time no one bothered to go to the offender to get things right or pray for them. Pride is a huge reason for these types of behavior. I am better than you because you have hang ups. Yet we fail to see our own short comings. The next quote is true.

What we don't understand is that there is nothing that grieves God's Spirit more than the hurtful words that come out our mouths. When we start accusing others in suspicion we have taken up Satan's job. We walk in darkness. God has made us stewards over our words because we are the ones that have control over our tongues. We need to hand over our tongues to God so that by grace he can help us bridle them. The bible tell us to not allow anything out of our mouth that does not impart grace to the hearers. What does that mean? It means that when we speak we are allowing God's mercy and love to encourage others to come up higher in Christ. I have heard many preachers cut people down so low that they feel like worthless worms unable to live their lives for Christ. That's not grace it's judgment. 

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:29-32).

My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. 2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. (James 3:1-2).

If you have read this today and realize that you have offended others with your words and hurt people in the name of the law. Please take the time to pray with me and ask God to forgive us for our carelessly wielding our tongue: 

Father, I ask you to forgive me for not imparting your grace to others and for not bridling my tongue. Forgive us for the slander, gossip, malice and libel in your church. Help us God not to walk in darkness by being suspicious and hurling accusations at others. Help me speak life over others and not death. I ask you to have your Holy Spirit shed his love upon my heart so that I can stop being so judgmental and critical of others. Put a guard over my mouth that I may not grieve your Spirit. Thank you God. Amen.
